The Hogan

West Burrafirth, Shetland

Fully modernised self catering apartment in a stunning location

The Accommodation

The Hogan was probably built in the early 1800s, but no one is really sure.  It is shown on maps of 1870 and was probably a single storey croft cottage with a peat roof.  The original walls still form part of the main house.  It was extended around 1900 and again around 1970.   ‘Hogan’ is the Old Norse for a pasture and it can be seen from its sheltered location that this is an ideal description.   It is also noted as ‘Da Hogen’ and ‘Heogan of Fogrigarth’.

The apartment is on the south side of the house and gets the best of the sunshine.   Fully modernised in 2003 it has a bedroom with double bed, living room (with futon sleeping 2 extra visitors if needed), kitchen, bathroom, utility room with washing machine and drying facilities. Parking and bicycle storage available.

Shetland Islands

The Shetland Islands are situated almost 1000 km north of London, as remote as you like yet easy to get to.   Only 15 of the 100+ islands are inhabited.   With a Pictish & Viking heritage, Shetland has only been part of Scotland for 500 years.   The climate is mild.  In summer it’s never too hot and in winter it hardly ever freezes or snows.   In June it is daylight almost all the time whilst at other times the clear air makes star gazing a spectacular experience.   If you are lucky you will see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).    There is an abundance of flora and fauna close at hand, natural and historical wonders to see.

West Burrafirth

West Burrafirth is a tiny community on the West Side of Mainland Shetland (known as the “wild west” because of its remoteness!).   There is a ruined Pictish broch, an ancient water mill system and a pretty harbour, home to small fishing boats and the ferry to the island of Papa Stour.   The area is ideal for bird and seal watching, artists & photographers, walking and cycling or as a retreat for  enjoying peace & quiet, fresh clear air and silence.
